Look, I’ll be honest with you. Last month, I was trying to snap a pic of my kid’s first soccer goal, and my iPhone just gave me that soul-crushing notification: “Cannot Take Photo.” My storage was completely full! I nearly lost it right there on the sidelines.
If you’ve ever experienced that frustration, you’re definitely not alone. Most iPhone users struggle with storage issues at some point, and it can feel overwhelming. But here’s the good news – I’ve figured out some killer tricks to free up iPhone storage that actually work!
Check What’s Eating Your Space
Before you start deleting stuff randomly, you gotta know where your storage is actually going. Head over to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. This was a real eye-opener for me, honestly.
I discovered that my Photos app was hoarding over 40GB of memories I’d forgotten about. The Messages app was sitting at 8GB because I never deleted old conversations with their attached videos. Pretty wild, right?
Apple provides some helpful recommendations right there on the storage screen. These suggestions are personalized based on your usage patterns, so they’re worth checking out.
Offload Those Apps You Forgot Existed
Here’s a feature I slept on for way too long – offloading unused apps. This removes the app but keeps its data, so you can reinstall it later without losing anything. It’s basically magic.
Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, then tap on any app and select “Offload App.” Or you can enable automatic offloading in Settings > App Store. I had games from 2019 just sitting there, taking up precious gigabytes!
Clean Up Your Photo Library
This one hurts, but it’s necessary. Your camera roll is probably stuffed with screenshots, duplicate photos, and blurry shots that’ll never see the light of day. Been there, done that.
Delete screenshots you’ve already used
Remove duplicate photos using the built-in duplicates album
Consider enabling iCloud Photos to store originals in the cloud
Empty your “Recently Deleted” album – this caught me off guard!
That Recently Deleted folder was holding onto 3GB of photos I thought were gone. Your deleted items stick around for 30 days unless you manually clear them out.
A Quick Video Guide That Helped Me
When I was really struggling with this, I found this helpful YouTube tutorial on clearing iPhone storage that walked through everything visually. Sometimes seeing someone actually do it makes all the difference.
Deal With Message Attachments
Text messages pile up faster than laundry in my house. All those photos, videos, and GIFs your friends send? They’re stored on your device and eating up space like crazy.
Navigate to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages. You’ll see categories like Top Conversations, Photos, and Videos. I was shocked to find conversation threads from years ago with gigabytes of attachments!
You can also set messages to auto-delete after 30 days or 1 year. This was a game-changer for me since I don’t need those random memes from 2021 anymore.
Clear Safari Data and App Caches
Browser data accumulates silently in the background. To clear Safari’s cache, go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. It’s a quick win that can free up several hundred megabytes.
For other apps, you might need to delete and reinstall them to clear their caches. Streaming apps like Spotify and Netflix can build up surprisingly large caches over time.
Your Storage Salvation Awaits

Managing iPhone storage doesn’t have to be a constant battle. By regularly checking what’s using your space and staying on top of photos, messages, and unused apps, you’ll keep that frustrating notification at bay.
Remember, everyone’s usage is different, so customize these tips based on what works for your lifestyle. And please – back up your important stuff to iCloud or your computer before you go on a deletion spree!
